The IRWO

Upholding LABC’s Respectful Workplace Policy
and helping maintain a respectful work environment

The Independent Respectful Workplace Office (IRWO) provides support to Participants of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia with the goal of upholding the Respectful Workplace Policy and helping maintain a respectful environment for those who work in the Legislative Assembly.

The purpose of the Respectful Workplace Policy is to ensure that all Legislative Assembly Participants interact in a manner that is consistent with a respectful workplace, free of disrespectful behaviour, harassment, discrimination, and violence.

Services

The IRWO is independent of the Legislative Assembly of BC’s (LABC) Administration and Caucuses so that we can offer you training, advice, coaching, and alternative dispute resolution services (mediations and supported dialogues), with the aim of resolving workplace conflict. In addition, should incidents of disrespectful behaviour, harassment, discrimination, or violence arise, the IRWO is available to investigate complaints promptly, fairly, and effectively.

Who We Serve

The Respectful Workplace Policy establishes universal standards of workplace conduct among the following Participant Groups:

  1. Members of the Legislative Assembly (MLAs)

  2. Caucus staff members

  3. Political staff members

  4. Legislative Assembly employees (Administration)

In the course of fulfilling their respective roles, Participants from different Groups regularly interact and work together. Participants are subject to their own workplace policies, agreements, and standards of conduct. However, it is important to have a common standard (the Policy) which governs interactions between Participants of different Groups and applicable procedures to follow when concerns arise.
